Criminal Record

 

In November 1875, Edward Willday (a cashier by Bamford Brothers, provision merchants of Mather Street, Liverpool) was charged with stealing £720 5s. 4d. from his employers. He absconded from his workplace and fled to Antwerp, Belgium, where he was apprehended and arrested. On 1 December 1875, he was tried at Liverpool Quarter Sessons, convicted of larceny, and served twelve months in Walton Prison with hard labour.

 

On 20 October 1880, Edward Willday, a 41 year old accountant from Liverpool, was listed on the calendar of prisoners at the Cheshire general quarter sessions. He was charged with “Stealing three domestic and reclaimed fowls, to wit, one cock and two hens, the property of James Marrs, at Poulton-cum-Seacombe”, on 27 September, 1880. At his trial on 21 October 1880, Edward pleaded guilty to larceny, after a  prior conviction, and was sentenced to six months with hard labour at Chester Castle.
