Note: John Robert Ashwell and Sarah Rowland were never married. He is identified here because, the Stamford Mercury (26 August 1864) indicates that, on 19 August 1864, Sarah Rowland made a successful claim against him for the support of her child: “John Robt. Ashwell, of Grantham, was ordered to pay 1s. 6d, per week for the maintenance of the bastard child of Sarah Rowland, of South Witham.” Sarah did not marry her husband Searson Norris until the second quarter or 1865.

 

He may be the same John Robert Ashwell, aged 37 (born in Leicestershire, England), who married Caroline Porter, aged 17 (born in Toronto, Ontario), on 3 June 1872 at Wayne, Michigan, USA.
