Note: The birth of Henry Whalley was not registered. It is worth noting that his apparent sister-in-law Catherine Jackson (listed above), who married James Whalley on 24 July 1848, did have an illegitimate son named Henry Jackson, who was born in Burscough and was baptised on 5 March 1847 at St. John’s Chapel, Lathom. In 1851, this Henry was living with James and Catherine Whalley at Pippin Street, Burscough, but subsequently has not been found on any later census records.
I believe that he may have been incorrectly described as the son of Thomas Whalley and Jane Emmanuel (or Manuel) in 1861. At the time of Henry’s birth, Jane Whalley (nee Emmanuel or Manuel) would have been about fifty-three years old, which makes it unlikely that she was his birth mother.
