A Note on the Parentage of Samuel Rowland:
The 1881 census shows Samuel recorded under the name of his stepfather, Searson Norris. Samuel also identified his father as Searson Norris on his marriage certificate. However, no father was identified on Samuel’s baptism record. The following extract from the Stamford Mercury (26 August 1864) indicates that, on 19 August 1864, his mother Sarah made a successful claim for maintenance from his apparent father: “John Robt. Ashwell, of Grantham, was ordered to pay 1s. 6d, per week for the maintenance of the bastard child of Sarah Rowland, of South Witham.”
