Notes: On 14 March 1899 he signed up for three years’ service with the Colours and nine years in the Reserves in the Coldstream Guards. He gave his age as 23 years and 2 months, and stated that he was a game keeper. His Army record said that he was 5ft 10in tall, weighed 139 lb., with a maximum chest measurement of 35in., a fresh complexion, blue eyes, and light brown hair. He identified as a member of the Church of England. He was discharged on 22 December 1900 on the grounds that he was medically unfit.
